Enhancing the look is production designer Waldermar Kalinowski
who also admits to occasionally being bowled over by the
entrancing beauty of some of the locations. "Because this is a
comedy and a love story," he explains, "we searched for visual
ideas that would give a flavour of the time and illustrate how
people behaved. It's extraordinary from today's perspective,
just how naive we were back then." Because of his scientific background - he worked for NASA around the time of the moon landing - and the fact that he abandoned it for a different life, Kalinowski has a particular interest in the subject matter of "Rough Magic". Kalinowski sees Wyatt's world, centred on Los Angeles, "as, post-atom bomb, a world of certainties, whereas the magicians world, Myra's world, is a world of uncertainty. The strange thing is," adds Kalinowski, "that science is now much more accepting of notions of uncertainty now; people have experienced the failure of certainty."
